Some of the minerals in certain megalodon teeth, especially land finds, will contain mineral hydrates, which are compounds that have additional water built into the crystal structure. If exposed to dry, warm air, some of the water from this crystal structure may leave, or essentially evaporate, changing the crystal structure and often times the color. The relative humidity in Indonesia is generally between 70%-90% , so this "drying out" often does not happen until the tooth arrives in a dryer climate in the US. We have found that by storing the more vibrant teeth that arrive from Indonesia in a humidified environment, these colors will be retained indefinitely. The only catch is that teeth with substantial amounts of matrix material in the root may develop small amounts of mold because of the nutrients present in the matrix material. Removal of the matrix material is possible, but will affect the appearance of the tooth. Teeth with no matrix in the tooth generally have minimal issues if they are wiped down with isopropyl periodically to keep them clean and mold free. Using humidifier packs made from storing cigars work very well in combination with using Ziploc bags, glass Tupperware or reasonably airtight glass or acrylic display enclosures.
